So I had to post this up. As everyone knows, I’m a huge Street Fighter fan, but I will say that Mortal Kombat from 1993-1997 def came in a close second. You know it’s very interesting to see the making of game, and you can tell that these people worked really hard on creating a third Mortal Kombat. I remember watching the first Mortal Kombat movie then a month later playing Mortal Kombat 3 at SportsLand in Gaithersburg for my birthday weekend. Everything about it was so brand new. The running feature, the combo system was really fast, and the elements from the details on stage as well as the spooky soundtrack, and characters. Everything was on point!
I love how in these sets of clips you get to see everything from the way they digitized (wow, that makes me feel a little old..hahaha) real life people and their movements in 8 separate ways. What they did with the voice acting, sound effects, and how they create the stages through drawings as well as 2D/3D backdrops. I think what I like most about this footage is that it seems more like a big gathering for about a year of non-stop testing, animation, and the like. Just imagine waking up and playing and testing a game you genuinely like and care about. I mean , it is very hard work, and there are very long hours, but I think the end result can be very gratifying, you know?
Ed Boon and John Tobias set the standard for a lot of the darker elements and raw feeling for a lot of fighting games these days (with the exception of Street Fighter, of course ^_-). Either way, you can’t deny the impact that Mortal Kombat still has today. They won best selling fighting game for a reason this year. Even I have to give them props for going back to the roots as well as continuing to innovate. Much props to Netherealm Studios!
