Yup, yup. Another Mortal Kombat post. I didn’t think this was out on YouTube, but luckily it is. I’m a true stickler for old documentaries or at least the making of video games. Like I said before, it’s always cool for seeing the process in the making to a masterpiece. The first shot I saw of this was Ho-Sung Pak who did the movements for Liu Kang. This is really dope because I remember watching WMAC Masters, and he played a character named Superstar. Loosely, based on himself as an actor in Hollywood. What I love about this Making of series, for one…it’s nearly 30 mins long. You get to see the early ideas of where they wanted to take the fighting game realm as far as a more “realistic” violent kind of route that actually had a huge impact on the rating system. You know the whole Rated MA for those ages 17 and up. Remember how the fatalities had such a huge controversy in the media? Before the whole GTA craze, there was Mortal Kombat. Why? Well, the blood is one thing and the fatalities and excess violence is another. The thing is this game was not catered to an older audience but kids and teenagers. Crazy, right?
What’s so crazy about this one, is that one person played 3 different characters. Johnny Pesina (he played Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Kano, and Sub-Zero) was really cool for taking on different roles, and I can only imagine how tiring that got changing into different costumes and the like 0_o. It’s really funny seeing how some of the movements like Liu Kang’s Flying Kick was really a stationary movement on the ground digitized and re-created. Just seeing the big green screen, the digitized animations, and the general overall feel takes you back to a time of just having fun clobbering your opponent. I can’t even imagine how many hours I put into these games as a kid. All I did back then was go outside and play video games. I didn’t really care for anything else to be honest. LOLOL.
Peep the nearly half hour making of Mortal Kombat 1!
