This is practically a gem right here. G4 did something right. HAHAHA. All jokes aside, I really dig this documentary that touches on a few key subjects that even correlate to now.
One thing that Sony was very ingenious for doing is branching out into something that they never tried before yet knew how to capitalize and diversify their market. It’s actually one of the topics I talked about in one of my other blogs.
Sony wanted to break into the gaming industry yet they were going to do so from an add-on perspective (much like the Sega 32X or even a Sega CD). Of course, that costs quite a bit of money and there is licensing that needs to be done for both parties involved. It’s really interesting if you think about it how Sony and Nintendo were both on the ball to do this. Seeing as Nintendo wanted to break into the 32 bit realm, and make more powerful games, this was their perfect opportunity to do so, but that did quite happen.
Instead, Nintendo felt more comfortable and opted to go with Phillips for their 3D factor, which was a REALLY bad move on their portion! Sony was backed into a corner, and basically said “Screw it!” and opted to build their own console right from scratch. Even when they first unveiled the plans in 1994 after Nintendo abruptly dropped the bomb, people were really concerned with how Sony could pull this off. However, they proved true when they were able to get hundreds of companies to develop games for them!
Now you bring this to today, and Nintendo is in series financial trouble with over a half billion dollars in the red. Now, just imagine if they really did do the Sony and Nintendo type of merger. Hmmm, the world will never know. Oh well, check the short documentary below. It’s pretty cool and informative!
